KunstBewusst: Zauber der Farbe. Impressionistische Freilichtmalerei

In the organizer's words:

What is it all about?

The practice of open-air painting played a prominent role in the genesis of Impressionism. Artists no longer worked only in the open air to make small-format sketches and later use them as memory aids for compositions executed in the studio and in artificial light. Instead, the paintings were made directly in front of the motif itself, often with considerable speed and in just a few painting sessions. On a technical level, this development was aided by practical innovations such as the introduction of resealable tube paints and the invention of the portable easel. In addition, the rapidly growing rail network from the 1840s onwards offered Paris-based painters quick and inexpensive access to a wide range of different topographies. The paintings, created en plein air, captivate with their bright coloring and dynamic brushwork and still inspire today with their impression of immediacy and freshness. The lecture sheds light on the art of Impressionism with a special focus on the great pioneer of open-air painting, Claude Monet (1840-1926).
