Karl Imhof in conversation with Fred Jahn, gallery owner and collector, Munich and Andreas Strobl, Staatl. Graphische Sammlung Munich
Moderator: Rüdiger Hoyer, Central Institute for Art History, Munich
On the occasion of Karl Imhof's donation to the library of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte
Karl Imhof, born in Munich in 1940, studied painting and graphic art at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Franz Nagel and Kurt P. Lohwasser from 1959 to 1965. Since 1965, he has had solo exhibitions and participated in exhibitions in Germany and abroad. In 1986 he was awarded the City of Munich Art Prize and in 2012 the Seerosenpreis. From 1990 to 2005 he was professor of lithography at the Munich Art Academy. In 1978, together with Ingrid Imhof, he founded D.P. Druck- und Publikations GmbH, a printing and publishing company for artists' editions. In addition to Karl Imhof's own artist publications, this studio also produced print editions, books and booklets by artists such as: Gerd Dengler, Martin Dessecker, Anke Doberauer, Ossi Fink, Günther Förg, Franz Hitzler and Katharina Ponnier, Manfred Hollmann, Jörg Immendorff, Axel Kasseböhmer, Markus Lüpertz, A. R. Penck, James Reineking, Jess Walter, Jerry Zeniuk, Bernd Zimmer, etc. Imhof collaborated with Fred Jahn as editor on the three-part portfolio "Die Architektur des Orgien Mysterien Theaters 1984-1992 II" by Hermann Nitsch, among others. Since 1989, Imhof has created numerous "Sprechstücke", which he performs himself in staged readings together with an established ensemble.
In addition to copies of his own artist's books, Karl Imhof also donated all publications published by D.P. Druck- und Publikations GmbH to the Zentralinstitut 2024, which were not yet available at the ZI. To accompany the event, we will be displaying a selection of the donation in showcases.
In an artist talk with the Munich gallery owner Fred Jahn and Dr. Andreas Strobl, Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, Karl Imhof will provide insights into his productions and his work, from which, also following on from the exhibition "Made in Munich - Editions from 1968 to 2008" curated by Julienne Lorz (Haus der Kunst, Munich, 2008/2009), a large part of not only the Munich printmaking art scene and the graphics market since the 1960s can be explored.
