The cultural heritage of Ukraine is at the heart of singer, composer, pianist and activist Ganna Gryniva's experimental work. Now a Berliner by choice, she grew up near Kiev, studied jazz in Weimar and combines jazz elements with Ukrainian folklore, classical music and experimental, cutting-edge music. She has thus found a particularly idiosyncratic and lively way of passing on the old songs. Her current album "Kupala" works with loops, samples and electronic effects and combines contemporary soundscapes without losing touch with the original themes of the Ukrainian singing tradition. JazzThing magazine's verdict: "wonderfully poetic and soulful".
