Kuratorinnenführung „Waffe Buchumschlag!“

In the organizer's words:

Curator's tour on International Museum Day

What the shop window is to the store, the cover is to the book. Whether image, font, color design or feel: the cover arouses curiosity about the contents of a book without giving too much away. With the exhibition "Weapon book cover! Photo, Cover and Propaganda in the 1930s", the German Museum of Books and Writing takes a look at the 1930s as an example of how political discourse and ideological battles were reflected on the covers of books in socio-politically heated times - to what extent the book cover became a weapon.

The exhibition is dedicated to printed works from this period with a focus on Austrian publications whose publishers were also active in Germany, particularly in Leipzig, and which have been little researched to date. Using around 100 examples, the exhibition presents the joy of experimentation in cover design using photography and typography in the 1930s.

The exhibition is a cooperation with the Photoinstitut BONARTES in Vienna and was curated by Monika Faber, Arne Reimer, Hanna Schneck and Pierre Pané-Farré. After stops in Vienna and Salzburg, it can now be seen in Leipzig.
Exhibition curator Hanna Schneck will provide background information on the exhibition during the guided tour.
