PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE EXHIBITION
"Long-forgotten heroes - Sinti*zze and Roma*nja athletes"
Thursday, August 28, 2025 / 7:00 pm / OstKurvenSaal of the Weser Stadium
Athletes such as boxer Oswald Marschall, footballer Angel Theiss and kickboxer Gerard Lindner are united by their outstanding performance in sport - and their decision to openly appear as Sinti*zze or Rom*nja. In doing so, they set an example against discrimination and prejudice. The exhibition "Long-forgotten heroines" shows the importance sport can have for the development of one's own identity and social participation and draws attention to the discrimination against Sinti*zze and Rom*nja. The portraits presented tell of identity and self-empowerment.
On the podium:
Oswald Marschall, political advisor at the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and exhibition curator together with Andrzej Bojarski. Marschall himself was a successful amateur boxer; his story is part of the exhibition and was the starting point for its creation.
Pavel Brunssen, a research associate at the Antiziganism Research Center at the University of Heidelberg, who researches antiziganism and minority subjectivities in popular cultures.
Moderated by Ralf Lorenzen:
A freelance sports writer, he has been dealing with the history and current situation of Sinti and Roma for 30 years, including in the autobiography "Meine hundert Leben - Erinnerungen eines deutschen Sinto" (My Hundred Lives - Memories of a German Sinto), written with Ewald Hanstein.
Following the panel discussion, Oswald Marschall will give a guided tour of the exhibition and the evening can be rounded off at the bar in the Ostkurvensaal.
