Production:

Necrotzar, the eponymous Great Macabre, has come to Breughelland to proclaim the extinction of the earth. He claims to be Death (assumption: he could be a chatterbox). But his apocalyptic threats and pitch-black fantasies of omnipotence are thwarted by the Breughellandians. Nekrotzar, under the massive influence of alcohol, is prevented from ending the world, framed in a social hustle and bustle that indulges in pure hedonism in all its facets. Nothing remains unimaginable or taboo here. After Nekrotzar's failed plan, death is dead. Time for eternal life. As in heaven, so on earth. The Last Judgement has taken place. Everyone will die, but certainly not today. The work, which György Ligeti himself described as an anti-anti-opera, is full of historical musical quotations, extreme coloratura arias, tricky rhythms, strange use of instruments and all kinds of over-the-top things. It will be performed for the first time at the Bavarian State Opera.
