The term Open Source Intelligence, or OSINT for short, originally comes from the field of intelligence services and today describes research using (online) freely accessible data. From a simple Google search to the geolocalization of photos and videos, it involves pulling out all the stops in the art of research. Lea Weinmann works in the investigative team of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and specializes in OSINT research. Among other things, she has written about the current protests in Iran and investigated the massive Ukrainian drone attack on Russian long-range bombers. What tools are used in OSINT research? How do you process the flood of reports and footage after major events? Salon host Jonas Pagel asks what significance OSINT has for modern journalism in times of social media and fake news.
