Designing Humans
The History and Ethics of Eugenics
What happens when humanity gains the power to shape future generations? Genetic screening, embryo selection, and gene editing are no longer science fiction. They’re already reshaping what’s possible and reviving old questions about who gets to decide.
Carlo G. Quintanilla is a molecular biologist and science policy analyst at the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Since 2022, he has been translating the science and ethics of biotechnology into talks that reach beyond the lab, featured in *Science*, on NPR, and at the AAAS Annual Meeting.
In this talk:
→ Where eugenics came from, and how it became public policy
→ How IVF, screening, and gene editing have changed what’s possible
→ Whether today’s reproductive technologies already echo old eugenic ideas
→ The open questions that science and policy haven’t answered yet
🎟️ Doors open at 6:30 p.m. → Talk at 7:00 p.m. → Q&A
