Leipzig Wine Festival 2026: Twelve summer evenings when the market square becomes a gathering place for all wine lovers
Once a year, something happens in Leipzig that half the city has been secretly looking forward to since May: the Leipzig Wine Festival returns to the market square. From July 1 through 12, 2026, the now 26th Leipzig Wine Festival invites you to linger in the city center. For twelve days, the market square and the adjacent Petersstraße by the Thomaswiese transform into exactly the kind of place you want to be after work: a glass in hand, the sun at your back, the old facades all around slowly bathed in the evening light, and in front of you, a wine you’ve never tasted before.
So if you’re looking for a wine festival in Leipzig that doesn’t feel like a stale folk festival but rather like a real summer in the city, then this is the event for you in July 2026.
Why the Leipzig Wine Festival is such a surefire hit
The beauty of the wine festival at Leipzig’s market square: It’s not just an anonymous bar. One key difference from many other wine festivals is that numerous booths are run by the winemaking families themselves. In other words, you’re not standing in front of just any service staff, but often right in front of the people who actually made the wine. This leads to conversations about grape varieties, growing regions, or the unique characteristics of individual vintages—often directly with the producers. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes the difference between “I’m just having a drink” and “I’ve really discovered something new today.”
Wines from 31 wineries—including three new to Leipzig—are waiting to be tasted this year. So even if you think you already know the wine festival, there are still new names and new bottles waiting for you.
From Saxony to South Africa: the 2026 wine selection
The 2026 Leipzig Wine Festival is both regionally rooted and internationally curious. Despite its international scope (France, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Australia, California, South Africa), the festival also has a strong regional presence: Eight booths and wineries from Saxony and four more from the Saale-Unstrut region are playing on home turf at the Leipzig Wine Festival.
So here, you can taste your way through the entire world of wine without ever leaving the market. Start with a Saxon Pinot Blanc from right next door, then swing over to the Saale-Unstrut region, and afterward, perhaps try something from California or South Africa that you’d never normally order. And because wine isn’t just wine, many winemakers bring even more to their stands: In addition to wines and sparkling wines, the selection also includes grape juices, wine liqueurs, vinegars, and various wine accessories.
And the best part for anyone who thought a wine festival like this wasn’t for them: With its selection of organic products, non-alcoholic options, and wines for people who previously couldn’t enjoy wine due to food intolerances, the wine festival is open to all visitors in all its diversity. Whether you’re looking for something with or without alcohol, you’ll find your perfect glass here.
The insider tip: Picnic vibes on Petersstraße
The market is the bustling, lively heart of the festival. But if the hustle and bustle ever gets to be too much, just take a few steps over to Petersstraße. Eight wine stands will be set up there, and combined with the seating areas or a blanket, they’ll create a picnic atmosphere on the green space—a peaceful retreat from the bustling market. Shady trees, a bench or a blanket, a glass of sparkling wine, and just let the city center pass you by. Sound like the perfect way to wind down after work? It is.
Stage, Music, and Flammkuchen: The Supporting Program
Wine on its own is nice, but it’s even better in good company and with music in your ears. Every day starting at 6:30 p.m., there’s a live program on the wine festival stage. The grand opening takes place on the very first day: The wine queens from the two regional wine-growing areas of Saxony and Saale-Unstrut will open the festival on July 1 at 5:00 p.m. on the market stage. Ute Schlossarek will host the event and, along with her band, will also provide the musical kickoff.
And since you shouldn’t drink good wine on an empty stomach, food will also be available. To complement the wine, the food stands will offer dishes that pair well with wine: tarte flambée, pretzels, a variety of cheeses, as well as the classic selection of snacks. A crispy tarte flambée and a chilled white wine on a balmy July evening at the Leipzig Market—it doesn’t get much more summery than that.
Leipzig Wine Festival 2026 Opening Hours at a Glance
So you know when to head out: The Wine Festival is open daily starting at 12 p.m. Winemakers and food vendors can decide flexibly whether to start their day as early as 2 p.m. The classic time to visit is in the evening, when the lights come on and the stage show begins. At 11:00 p.m. sharp, the last round is announced before the bars close, but you can finish your drinks until 11:30 p.m. On the last day, the festival ends at 8:00 p.m.
