Reading and discussion with Klaus Neumann about: Altona as a place of refuge, hospitality and solidarity, anger and shame, civic participation and the role of local politics, racism and right-wing violence, identity and history
The accommodation of people seeking protection, whether in container settlements, on accommodation ships, in tents, in pavilion villages or in hotels, was and is often controversial, even in Altona. With its history of the reception of asylum seekers and refugees over the last 35 years - and local stories from Hamburg-Altona and south-eastern Saxony - the book Blumen und Brandsätze, which will be published in April, aims to initiate calm and well-founded discussions about how to deal with people "whom we did not call", but also about justice and democratic participation.
The German-Australian historian Klaus Neumann was a professor of history at a university in Melbourne until a few years ago. He is the author of several (English-language) books, including on colonial history, refugee policy and the culture of remembrance.
