Götz Aly is one of the best-known authors on the history of National Socialism and the Holocaust - here he asks the central question: How could this happen?

In 1932, during a serious crisis, the NSDAP was elected by far the strongest party. It was soon able to take power and build on growing social support. Hitler needed the war - the people were afraid of it. Nevertheless, 18 million German soldiers eventually terrorized Europe.

How did this come about? Why did hundreds of thousands take part in unprecedented mass murders?

In his book, Götz Aly describes the methods of rule used by the Nazi rulers to turn millions of Germans into compliant enforcers or into war-dulled participants - many of which are frighteningly topical.
