The racist right and Islamic fundamentalism are perceived as opponents that are sharply differentiated from each other and even fight each other. But at the same time, they define themselves through a common enemy: the modern world, the open society, the metropolitan way of life. On closer inspection, both turn out to be very similar reactionary responses to the challenges of modernity.
The philosopher, HPD author and podcaster Sebastian Schnelle works out the often overlooked overlaps between the New Right, Alt-Right and Islamism. These include the rejection of reason, misogyny, disdain for human rights and contempt for democracy. In doing so, he spans the arc from the ideological precursors at the beginning of the 20th century to the online worlds of the present.
