Anyone who only thinks of computer game music as beeping synthesizer sounds is mistaken: elaborately produced scores by pop legends such as David Bowie, opulent symphonic compositions or award-winning contemporary works accompany many video games today. The complex musical accompaniment creates emotional tension and atmospheric colors in the game and makes the virtual environment appear realistic and immersive.

Heroes such as Nintendo's 'Princess Zelda' are set in multi-layered worlds of sound: the music by Koji Kondo - who was also responsible for the sound of 'Super Mario' - combines Gregorian chants, Arabic harmonies, harp, flamenco and borrowings from Gustav Holst's 'Planets'. It's no wonder that many orchestras now like to present the award-winning soundtrack in the concert hall.

6 out of 10 people in Germany play video games and spend over 6 billion euros on them every year: The market for game music is correspondingly large, and there are correspondingly many fans who associate numerous stories and memories with the soundtracks of their favorite games.

Fridl Achten is a music journalist and is passionate about video games. In the BR-Klassik podcast "Levels & Soundtracks", the two come together. Fridl wants to know from his guests: What are the games that have shaped them the most in their lives? Which soundtracks do they celebrate the most? On November 30, the Versicherungskammer Kulturstiftung and BR Klassik are bringing together Podcast & Concert: Live on stage, we welcome TikTok star Shirli and pianist Benyamin Nuss, who has been arranging and performing gaming soundtracks for many years.
