Lisa Batiashvili spielt Brahms' Violinkonzert

Johannes Brahms remarked to the conductor Hermann Levi: "I will never compose a symphony! You have no idea how we feel when we always hear such a giant marching behind us." The "giant" of course meant Beethoven. How fortunate that Brahms' prophecy did not come true and that he finally succeeded in stepping out of Beethoven's shadow - even more: with his "First", Brahms found his unmistakable symphonic profile. Zubin Mehta still remembers well the first time he heard Brahms' "First" as a young student in Vienna. It was like a revelation for him. For Lisa Batiashvili, Johannes Brahms' symphonies are among the greatest masterpieces in music history, as she admitted in an interview. She would take all four of them with her to a desert island and would be perfectly content with them. Incidentally, Batiashvili also sees the Violin Concerto as a kind of symphony, a very personal one in which Brahms reveals his feelings and speaks with deep human passion.
