In his book "Traum Zeit Reise", tourism researcher Hasso Spode, Professor of Historical Sociology and long-standing director of the Historical Archive of Tourism, traces the history of travel. He traces it from its beginnings in antiquity right up to present-day mass tourism.
Spode highlights how the view of nature in the 18th century changed from one of fear to one of longing and how travel was instrumentalized in the 19th century for the National Socialists' "Strength through Joy" ideology. The tourism researcher is always interested in what attitudes towards travel say about society.
In conversation with Daniel Müller Hofstede, head of the cultural program, he also discusses the modern myth of the vacation as a recreational ritual and the assumption that the history of travel is ultimately the history of the modern soul.
