»Long gradus«

Quatuor Bozzini: Davachi | Tenney | Simms | Medekšaitė

More than 400 commissions and around 500 world premieres in 25 years: The Canadian Quatuor Bozzini has dedicated itself to the latest music more uncompromisingly than almost any other string quartet.

Among other things, the "Composers' Kitchen" initiated by the ensemble offers young composers a generous framework in which to test the sound effect of their works while they are still being written. Canadians Sarah Davachi and Bekah Simms and Lithuanian-born Egidija Medekšaite were able to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Davachi, for example, for her piece "Long Gradus", in which a harmonious landscape changes very gradually. Medekšaite, who studied textile design as well as composition, likes to compare her works with fabric structures - as in the quartet "Megh Malhar", which was inspired by shimmering organza fabrics, an Indian raga and the visual image of glittering dewdrops.

Also on the program: "Arbor Vitae", a commission by the Quatuor Bozzini, which was to be the last composition by James Tenney, who died in 2006. The image of the tree of life aptly symbolizes the diversely branched microtonal structures of the US avant-gardist.
