A maelstrom of derangement: a father disappears from his familiar surroundings. An acoustic performance about age and fragile memory.
Victor is over eighty years old. He is there, on stage with his children, and at the same time he has long since set out to leave them all. Argentinian author and director Juan Pablo Gómez has created Los bienes visibles, which translates as "The visible things", a touching evening of theater about saying goodbye. He approaches the subject not through plot, story or psychology, but through sound, noises, songs and pauses.
The experience is an acoustic setting in which even seeing becomes secondary. The audience can rely on their ears; a variety of sounds guide them through situations. Words can also be heard, they break off and are carried by breath, song and silence. This vividly conveys how the father moves out of a shared presence, while the children try to hold him close and keep him close to them. It is the process of a slow acceptance of estrangement, which is nevertheless to be experienced as a natural fact.
Accompanied by sounds from a sampler, instruments and the voices of three singers, all the players move around the room. They wander, turn and change positions. They climb onto platforms on which part of the audience sits, while the rest of the audience is distributed around the room on chairs. In this way, the artists unite with the audience. Juan Pablo Gómez's disturbing pieces deal with growing up, failed parenthood and the experience of losing one's own parents. Los bienes visibles focuses on "the things" that were visible and are now disappearing. And on what is forming anew for this very reason.
