Great puppet theater of memory: artfully crafted puppets, light and movement create an imaginative world for all generations.
The title of this quiet yet intense evening of puppet theater from Indonesia could be translated as "Stream of Memory". During the forced isolation of people in the years of the coronavirus pandemic, the artist duo Maria Tri Sulistyani and Iwan Effendi began to develop a work that arose from their longing for closeness, relationships and the feeling of connection with other people. This longing has resulted in a stage narrative without words, a story about remembering, forgetting and what remains between people when transience sets in. The entertaining evening is intended for younger and older people alike.
A giant creature called Kali can be seen on stage. It symbolizes forgotten rivers, is both the guardian of memory and a witness to a world in flux. He is met by fantasy figures that move between hints of houses, raging river water, light and sand. They do not speak, they breathe. Each of their movements, each sound, each light in the room creates a rhythm that is more perceptible than explainable. Kali's path through worlds and times develops a maelstrom of fascination with the eternally incomprehensible. Using masterfully crafted materials such as wood, fabric, rattan, clay and leather, guided by magical movements, the Indonesian ensemble of the Papermoon Puppet Theatre creates imaginative worlds. Even if the stage remains almost empty, a lot happens and a very unique stage life is created.
Stream of Memory is an invitation to watch, perceive and remember: rivers, encounters, what remains despite transience. The Papermoon Puppet Theatre from Yogyakarta on the island of Java has been one of the most haunting voices of contemporary puppet theater in the international theater world for almost two decades.
