Louis Spohr: Des Heilands letzte Stunden (Passionsoratorium) präsentiert von Rausgegangen

In the organizer's words:

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Kammerchor Stuttgart under the direction of Frieder Bernius will perform Louis Spohr's almost unknown Passion oratorio "Des Heilands letzte Stunden" in Stuttgart (Liederhalle, Hegelsaal) on November 5, 2023.

Written under the impression of the 1729 revival of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," Spohr nevertheless lets us participate in the Passion story from a completely different perspective. His reporters are the disciple John and Mary, Jesus' mother. They not only report or tell the story of the Passion, they describe it particularly vividly, sometimes drastically, not as in the "secco" recitative of the Baroque period. A large space is taken up by the lamentations of the disciples Judas and Peter, the scene before the High Court of Caiaphas, and the scene before the cross with the following, especially painted earthquake. And unlike some of Spohr's operas, which have been revived in the past but have had problems of acceptance mainly because of their libretti, here we have the chance to follow more easily and understand better a hitherto unknown compositional master's manuscript through an event known to us since our childhood and which moves us. Do not miss this opportunity!
