"Mountains seas and giants": Döblin's 1924 novel about the future meets us today: a German-Chinese futuristic live scenario of images, performance and sound.

The rise of China is redefining Asia, and with it Europe. Is it a threat to the Western-dominated world order? Will a conflict in Eurasia be the world's "last great war"? The present seems to be in a state of limbo.
One hundred years ago, Alfred Döblin described this state in his novel about the future, "Mountains Seas and Giants", as a literary "factual fantasy": as an incessant chain of climate catastrophes and continental drift, crises, pandemics and global economic crises.
The Chinese-German Paper Tiger Theater Studio has discovered this material for the stage. The premiere at the festival arouses curiosity about a world of images and sound, lots of movement and a narrative with amazingly simple and sensual means. The ensemble of artists exists between the worlds. The pieces are created in a constant exchange between German and Chinese history and stories.
Four dancers, actors and singers from China and Germany work with videography and spatial design. Their bodies, shaped by different cultural backgrounds and contemporary discourses, embody the contradictory emotions between gloomy visions of the future and the reality of the present.
Chinese, German, English and other languages from different cultures interweave to create a multi-layered tapestry of sound.
