Lyrik als Ware? Populäre Poesie zwischen Sprachkunst und Kommerzialisierung

In the organizer's words:

Poetry as a commodity? Popular poetry between language art and commercialization.

November 29, 2023, 7:30 p.m., admission free

University of Hamburg, Philosophenturm, Lecture Hall C, Von-Melle-Park 6, 20146 Hamburg.

Commercially successful formats such as the poetry slam or insta-poetry are often subject to the suspicion of foregoing literary qualities in favor of popular success. This criticism is not only voiced externally, for example by the feuilleton, but also from within the respective scenes themselves. Poetry slam organizers such as Thomas Geyer, for example, criticize the fact that humorous elements increasingly dominate poetry slams in the German-speaking world - slam poems that can be characterized as poetry hardly exist anymore. These critical statements often contain an implicit assumption that is worthy of discussion: Can commercial success only be had at the expense of a loss of artistic quality?

We would like to discuss these questions together with poetry slammer and author David Friedrich and literary and cultural scholar Niels Penke. David Friedrich is one of the most successful poetry slammers of the present, in 2021 he became the German-speaking poetry slam champion. At the same time, he moderates various poetry slams and is the author and editor of poetry slam anthologies. Niels Penke currently holds a substitute professorship for Modern German and General Literary Studies at the University of Siegen. He works on the theory and history of the popular, and in 2022 his monograph Instapoetry. Digital Bild˗Texts. The evening will be moderated by Henrik Wehmeier, wiss. Collaborator in the ERC project "Poetry in the Digital Age."
