The relationship between Cio-Cio-San, known as "Butterfly", and the American naval officer Benjamin F. Pinkerton begins as a pro-forma marriage - and develops unexpected consequences: The young Japanese woman breaks with her family and hopes to escape her poor background. When Pinkerton is sent away, Cio-Cio-San stays behind; she is expecting his child. She waits unwaveringly for his return.
