Antoine Tamestit inspires with his dark, warm viola tone and musical storytelling. With the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, he creates a program full of emotional depth and exciting contrasts: alongside excerpts from the Art of Fugue and chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Hindemith's touching Funeral Music forviola and orchestra, a musical obituary for the English King George V. The viola appears fragile, searching and doubtful in Alfred Schnittke's expressive monologue . In his intimate Chamber Symphony, Dmitri Shostakovich laments the victims of war and fascism.
