MAMMA MIA! has been thrilling audiences around the world for more than 25 years. It premiered in London in April 1999. To date, MAMMA MIA! is the third longest running musical in London's West End with over 10 million spectators. Over 65 million people have seen this marvel in 50 productions and in 16 different languages. In 2011, MAMMA MIA! was the first musical in the western hemisphere to be performed in Mandarin in the People's Republic of China. It went on to become the eighth longest-running show in Broadway history, where it ran for a record-breaking 14 years.
Since its premiere in London's West End, the world's most spectacular and entertaining musical has been breathed new life into two very successful film adaptations. MAMMA MIA! the 2008 film produced by Judy Craymer became the most successful musical film of all time after its release and the second film, MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN from 2018 is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.
Behind the production of MAMMA MIA! is a top-class creative team. The music and lyrics are known to have been penned by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus. Catherine Johnson wrote the book, Phyllida Lloyd directed and Anthony Van Laast was responsible for the choreography. The production was conceived by Mark Thompson, the lighting design by Howard Harrison, the sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken and the music direction, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.
