Manfred Lütz was born in Bonn in 1954, where he also grew up. He studied medicine and Catholic theology and served for many years as chief physician at the Alexianer Hospital in Cologne, a specialized psychiatric clinic. In addition to his medical practice, he is known as a bestselling author and combines expertise with humor in his books. Among his best-known works are *“Crazy! We’re Treating the Wrong People: A Critical Examination of Psychiatry,”* as well as *“God—A Brief History of the Greatest,”* which makes theological questions accessible. Lütz regularly appears as a speaker and is known for his incisive analyses of social issues. Since 1981, he has been involved with an inclusive youth group for disabled and non-disabled adolescents and young adults in Bonn; he is a public voice in discussions on church and ethical issues and advocates for a respectful view of mental illness. In 2003, he was even appointed by Pope John Paul II as a “Consultor to the Congregation for the Clergy” and, in the same year, organized a conference at the Vatican on the topic of “Abuse of Children and Adolescents by Catholic Priests and Religious.” To this day, he remains committed to this issue and contributes his expertise to the public debate on the subject. Dr. Manfred Lütz is married, has two daughters, and lives near Bonn.
