THIS IS NOT A CHURCH
Manifesta 16 Ruhr is taking place in four cities in the Ruhr region. In Bochum, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and Essen, former churches will be transformed into cultural community spaces. The artistic program includes events, performances, workshops, interventions and exhibitions. They all show how these churches can be transformed into something new - by and for the local community.

The Gethsemane Church is a remarkable example of a Protestant emergency church. Emergency churches served as temporary places of worship in times of crisis or transition in order to offer short-term places of spiritual support and gathering. After the Second World War in particular, parts of large damaged church buildings were often partitioned off with temporary walls and ceilings and used as makeshift churches until it was possible to fully restore the entire building.
