The exhibition Marching on - Queer Protests photographed by Horst Middelhoff presents a photographic retrospective of gay and queer protest movements at the turn of the millennium in Munich, Berlin and the USA. The photographs come from the estate of photographer and journalist Horst Middelhoff, who died in 2025 and was passionately committed to Munich's gay scene, documenting it with his camera throughout his life. From colorful CSD parades to ACT-UP demonstrations in the wake of the AIDS crisis, the photos impressively reflect the diversity of the LGBTIQ* community and its political and social development over time. At the same time, from Horst Middelhoff's personal perspective, they tell of the people who significantly shaped Munich's queer scene and are still shaping it today.
The exhibition invites visitors to look back together on the achievements of the LGBTIQ* community, to talk to each other and to stand up for queer rights in solidarity. It sees itself as a contribution to strengthening queer visibility and opens up a space for dialogue that honors the commitment of past activists and at the same time focuses on current and future perspectives of the queer community.
