Mary Stuart
after Friedrich Schiller
About the play
Queen Elizabeth and Mary Stuart are both predestined by their self-image to rule England as queen. Their conflict for power is also a struggle between Catholic and Protestant forces vying for supremacy on the island.
Their world is both a stage and a prison, for the eyes of the world leave none of their steps and actions unobserved. In the world of the two queens there is no private life, no separation between inside and outside. But insisting on their rightful claim to the role of queen and the use of manipulation and coercion is the only chance for both of them to survive against enemies and false friends.
The biographical point at which Mary Stuart and Elizabeth meet is the turning point: the death sentence against Mary is written and Elizabeth hesitates to sign it - the global political consequences are too far-reaching! But time is playing against them both.
