"At the beginning of the 20th century, Christian Morgenstern invented various fantastical creatures and plants in a children’s poem, including ‘the Turtelunke,’ ‘the Gürtelstier,’ and ‘the Tagtigall’ —a playful tribute and a declaration of love for the way language can expand our understanding of the world. For years now, the ‘Tagtigall’ has been a fixture as a poetry column in the realms of the online magazine Perlentaucher, from where it explores linguistic landscapes near and far—including poetic techniques and experimental arrangements, sonnets, minnesang, and concrete poetry—from which it soars, sings, and observes. The essays collected here for the first time are exploratory flights and songs through the thicket of poetic thought and linguistic movements—spurred by a specific question, a specific sense of wonder, a shock, or a moment of delight. The poetic explorations—on Szilárd Borbély, Nico Bleutge and Bertolt Brecht, on Elke Erb, Kim Hyesoon and Friederike Mayröcker, Oskar Pastior, Jan Wagner, Uljana Wolf, and many others—roam the impassable terrain of reality and reveal themselves as luminous images of thought. *The Songs of the Dayingale* is a passionate plea for the creative power of language and thought."
