About the book:
"West Berlin, the 1960s. When Max hears Jimi Hendrix for the first time, a whole new world opens up for him. But he still has a long way to go before he gets there. At home, Max feels doubly trapped. His mother forces him to play the piano, while his father—a pianist himself—wraps himself in the silence of his generation; the Nazi past is still very much present. Slowly, Max begins to recognize the lies that underpin German life—and breaks free. He turns to rock music and the subculture; he protests, experiments, and moves into Commune I. Then his mother lures him to Tenerife to stay with an uncle. It’s meant to be a form of re-education. Max is forced to cut off his long hair, but on the island he also discovers the underground scene, falls in love with the beautiful Lourdes, and finds himself in the crosshairs of the Guardia Civil. Fascism is still alive in Spain. Can Max find his freedom? In his autobiographically inspired novel, Stefan Roloff tells the story of youth and rebellion in 1960s Germany—a time caught between a dark past and the economic miracle, as pop culture and the sexual revolution swept in—wild, intoxicating, and free."
