A family on vacation: they swim in the sea, lie on the beach and their mere presence becomes a problem for the locals. An atmosphere of anxiety spreads. A magic show seems like a welcome distraction. Night falls and the spectacle begins. As soon as the magician's whip sounds, the guests begin to move according to his wishes. Is the magician merely revealing the desire and will of those in front of him? Or is he shaping their thoughts according to his wishes? The night becomes darker, the game more grotesque. Until the inconspicuous Mario, still taken in by the magician's game of seduction, wakes up and tries to free himself from the spell. A shock. A liberation? Thomas Mann's novella is regarded as an analysis of the rise of fascism in Italy in the 1920s and remains as relevant as ever in its examination of the creeping shift in what can be said and the seductiveness of human beings.
