Detailed compositions and purposefully applied pop elements mixed with a touch of theatricality. Matthew And The Atlas moves as a British artist in his indie songs between exuberance and pain. Just what life brings with it on a daily basis.
Matthew And The Atlas appeared on the scene about 13 years ago. Since then, he has traversed various musical territories, from acoustic folk to synth-laden electronica and guitar-led alt-rock to indie pop. It is here, at the latest, that it becomes clear what makes him tick as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Subtle melodic sensibility, the creation of different images in his lyrics and distinctive vocals. His strikingly seemingly emotional style of speech nestles delicately with the lightly vibrating voice, enveloping listeners in a light garment of his thought world. It comes across as an invitation to close one's eyes and embark on a shared journey to one's own center.
His recently released single was a foretaste of the album that is already in the starting blocks. "Folding Unfolding" is a reminder to leave the past behind and accept a situation as it is. Despite everything, he creates a paradox in which he asks himself what he can do when everything has faded, new paths are still blurred and darkness fills the room. In a quiet, raspy voice, Matthew makes it palpable that each ending raises unity and yet unanswered questions about the future. Which future question, however, does not remain unanswered: When will Matthew And The Atlas come to Germany again? Already this November, the audience has the chance at five dates, even in a world full of soulful indie pop, which seeks its equal.
