Sésé Niyabja with Zayou
Movement Lecture and Performance
In her artistic practice, Sésé Niyabja emphatically highlights that the Bèlè dance goes beyond mere movement. It embodies a philosophy rooted in the wisdom of ancestors and in collective identity. Originating in Martinique, Bèlè profoundly expresses the interconnectedness of body, community, and spirit. Every step, guided by the rhythm of the drums, reflects a comprehensive understanding of one’s own physicality and emotions. By surrendering to the movements of the sound, the dancers tap into forms of bodily knowledge that promote healing, release, and self-empowerment. Mètkow: Chajé – Déchajéaims to introduce the audience to Martinique’s Bèlè tradition while creating an immersive ceremonial experience. This movement presentation invites participants to experience the dynamic energy of Bèlè, where community, self-expression, and healing processes converge into a powerful celebration. The presentation culminates in a live performance in which the artist embodies the essence of Bèlè through dance, sound, and storytelling. Niyabja welcomes those present into a sacred circle, which is opened by the rhythm of the Bèlè drum and the rustling breath of the Konk de Lambi shell instrument.
