For Schubert's 229th birthday

January 31, 2021, coronavirus-induced short break in a farmhouse in Lower Bavaria - driving snow outside, freezing cold, wood-burning stove inside ... the Brad Mehldau Trio spins in the CD player - "blues & ballads".

So much blues with just a few notes. You could become envious of the American songbook, of the American heritage of the blues.
Is there no German-language Western blues collection?
Yes, there is.

Schubert's "Winterreise", composed in the fall of 1827, based on a collection of poems by Wilhelm Müller. Composed a year before his death - you can't get more blues than that.

But does it also work in a jazz trio? One thing is certain: you have to take Schubert seriously. No quoting of melodies underlaid with modern rhythms and jazz chords. No: exploration. How can you reinterpret Schubert's "Winter Blues"? Where has Schubert secretly hidden jazz grooves, created chord sequences for improvisations?

There are "only" 12 pieces.
The material is treated differently - always with respect - retaining the original piano writing and melody. Improvisational ideas are distilled from the harmony sequences. The grooves emerge from the composition.
