Michelle David grew up in a New York church, began singing at the age of four and joined her first group, "The Mission of Love", at the age of five. Before she made a name for herself in Europe, she toured the world with Broadway productions such as "Mama", appeared in major theater productions such as "The Sound of Motown", "Glory of Gospel" and "Mahalia" and recorded for stars such as Diana Ross and Michael Bolton. These early experiences laid the foundation for a career characterized by authenticity, versatility and an unmistakable voice that bridges genres and generations.

Michelle David & The True-Tones emerged from the acclaimed project "The Gospel Sessions", which was founded by musicians Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit. What began as pure, original reinterpretations of gospel quickly developed into a fully-fledged band with an unmistakable identity. With drummer Bas Bouma completing the core quartet, the group forged its own characteristic sound: gospel at its root, branching out confidently into soul, funk, afrobeat and rhythm & blues.

With seven studio albums (The Gospel Sessions Vol. 1-4, Truth & Soul and Brothers & Sisters), the band has created an impressive body of work that has gained international recognition. Highlights include Truth & Soul being named 'Album of the Year' by BBC Radio 6 Music, being voted 'Album of the Month' by French radio station FIP and an Edison nomination (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammys). Their music has been praised in leading media such as De Volkskrant, Kulturnews and Jazzthing and has cemented their reputation as one of the most fascinating soul and gospel formations in Europe.

On stage, Michelle David & The True-Tones develop an undeniable, powerful presence. Whether as a well-rehearsed, energetic quartet or augmented by a full horn section, their shows radiate joy, musicality and groove. They have swept audiences off their feet at major festivals such as Pinkpop, North Sea Jazz, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz and the London Jazz Festival. On February 27, 2026, Michelle David & The True-Tones will release their most personal album to date: Soul Woman. With themes of identity, healing and growth at its heart, the album reflects David's own journey of self-discovery. "How can I ask others to take time to think about their lives and not think about it myself?" she asks. Musically, the album bridges the gap between timeless soul and contemporary grooves, drawing inspiration from legends such as Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Four Seasons and D'Angelo. The result is a collection of songs that is both intimate and universal, translating personal truths into messages of self-empowerment and connection.
