Midissage: Dreams and my Reality I

In the organizer's words:

Midissage

The Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences invite you to the midissage of the exhibition Dreams and my Reality I. In addition to welcoming remarks by the institutions and the City of Düsseldorf, there will also be a guided tour of the exhibition at around 5:30 pm.

The exhibition

Exhibiting in a museum is a dream for many artists. In a "white cube" that is only open to their own work, their own image, their own thoughts and that can be occupied by them. But what happens when young artists encounter a reality in which the exhibition space is already occupied by a collection?

A museum that is full of history and in which every wall tells stories makes it possible to view the rooms and exhibits as a unit and to react to them. The artists find something to which they can create references in terms of content and form in their work and to which they can add and comment on what they find.

In Prof. Mareike Foecking's "Artistic Research" course, students have been exploring the question of which methods can be used for artistic research for some time. Their exhibition at the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf is the result of their intensive examination of individual research questions, which are now explicitly integrated into the spaces and content of the Stadtmuseum. It is about urban society, generational change, cultural diversity, identity, power and powerlessness, architectural structures and ideologies. Other works deal with the city's artists and the myths surrounding them. The students work across different media. They add their own dreams and realities to the history exhibited in the Stadtmuseum. In doing so, they create a diversity of form and content that reflects the diversity of young people's lives.
