Few composers have placed percussion so consistently at the center of contemporary music as Steve Reich. For him, percussion is not merely a rhythmic accompaniment, but a vehicle for form, energy, and musical thought. Using simple means—clear patterns, repetitions, and minimal shifts—he creates not only an astonishing sonic density but also a hypnotic effect. Reich became famous for what is known as “phasing”: identical rhythmic figures run in slight counterphase and gradually fall out of sync. Works such as “Music for Pieces of Wood” or “Drumming Part One” make this process immediately audible and also visible. In “Pendulum Music,” physical processes take the lead, while “Six Marimbas” celebrates the warm, resonant sound of the instrument. Reich’s music demands the utmost precision, yet comes across as immediate and surprisingly accessible.
