The first Russian IKEA store was opened in the Moscow suburb of Khimki on March 22, 2000. In his documentary, director Michael Chauvistré shows what it looks like when IKEA conquers the world with Billy, Klippan and Ivar. He tells the story of a German-German love affair that began in Berlin and led to the furniture department store in the Russian metropolis.
Manuela and Ulf, a woman from the East and a man from the West, both employees of the Swedish furniture giant, fell in love at IKEA in Berlin-Spandau. They left their families and decided to start something new together. So they signed up to set up IKEA in Moscow.
Due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, all IKEA stores were closed in March 2022. It is the first time that this film has been shown in the new global political situation. It provides an insight into the mood in Moscow at the beginning of Putin's rule.
