Miteinander Rheinkirmes. Eine Zeitreise durch die Erlebnisräume der Größten Kirmes am Rhein

Exhibition Ausstellung Museum Queer Kirmes Rheinkirmes Pink Monday Schützen Partizipation
In the organizer's words:

With the current special exhibition, the TMD celebrates the nostalgic and fond memories that people have shared at the Rhine fun fair. In a unique preparatory process, objects of memory and stories of people from Düsseldorf were collected, which are exhibited here for the first time. Who wants to embark on a journey through time?

Theater is everywhere, especially at the funfair
Every year, the "Biggest Funfair on the Rhine" offers the greatest theater: grandiose costumes in the form of marksmen's costumes and drag dresses or outstanding scenery at the ghost train and the bratwurst stand. It is the theater of the fair that is the foundation for the extraordinary coexistence of different communities between the shooting society, roller coaster fans and the queer community. No other fair has such diversity to offer.

From the attic to the museum: ride chips, cuddly toys and more
For the exhibition, the TMD team talked to people from Düsseldorf about their Rheinkirmes. Their stories form the basis of the exhibition. These stories are always connected with souvenir objects, which are exhibited in the Hofgartenhaus in combination with historical objects. Thus, among other things, a fireworks display from 1585 meets an amateur video from the 1960s. They are joined by cuddly toys, driving chips and shooting jackets. Exclusively for Miteinander Rheinkirmes, the director and photographer Faraz Baghaei has taken photographic portraits of carnies and their seasonal employees, without whose commitment the cheerfulness of the fair would be unthinkable.

Participative meeting spaces
In the TMD, visitors are invited to encounter the fascinating stories as well as to immerse themselves in their own memories of the Rhine funfair and other folk festivals. The four exhibition rooms with their different room designs support this process. In addition, the public can become part of the exhibition at various locations and voting stations: Have you ever won a lottery? Ferris wheel or rather fish roll?

Highlights:

  • Cheap Perfume - the song written especially for the exhibition by Gulliver DeLarge.
  • Anecdotes of dates and wild funfair experiences on beer mats.
  • An accompanying booklet with exhibition texts and in-depth information as a souvenir.
