Mittagspause im Museum: Friedrich Gerstäckers Schrift „Friedensverhandlungen in North Platte – ein Augenzeugenbericht aus dem Jahr 1867“ mit Maja Jonas

As part of the popular "Lunch Break at the Museum" series, the museum invites you to a guided tour on the subject of Friedrich Gerstäcker's book "Peace Negotiations in North Platte - an Eyewitness Report from 1867" with Maja Jonas from the Friedrich Gerstäcker Society e.V. Braunschweig. The museum's Gerstäcker collection is part of the permanent ethnological exhibition "In the Beginning was the Belt. Brunswick ethnographica, souvenirs and colonial trophies".

The Brunswick travel writer Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872) was once again in North America during his last major trip around the world in 1867/68. There, as a journalist, he was allowed to accompany the supreme commander of the US army, General Sherman, to North Platte for peace negotiations with indigenous people. The violent conflicts surrounding the construction of the railroad were to be brought to an end. The ethnological exhibition in the Municipal Museum contains photographs of the conference participants and portraits of the chiefs, whom Gerstäcker described in impressive detail.

Gerstäcker's records of the negotiations, which lasted several days, offer a rare glimpse behind the scenes: He documented in the greatest detail the proceedings and the statements made, describing the indigenous camps and the construction site of the railroad. Gerstäcker's vivid descriptions allow us to experience an altogether problematic time in North America at first hand, so to speak.

After the short, approx. 20-minute tour, participants are cordially invited to continue their exchange over a drink and a piece of cake in the cafeteria.

Admission: Adults €5.00; concessions (for pupils, students, trainees, people with disabilities, pensioners and holders of the "Braunschweig Pass") €2.50; children aged 6 - 16 €2.00; free admission for school classes and children under 6. The Städtisches Museum is fully accessible. The Municipal Museum is a member of the Braunschweig MuseumsCard. It allows free admission once and permanently reduced admission on subsequent visits for one year to the seven largest museums in Braunschweig.
