Mizrahi Music Kiosk

Mizwasfürmusik? Indeed, it is a musical genre rarely heard in Munich that we are tackling today at the Habibi Kiosk. But - we can promise you this much - it's worth it! Originally, the term Mizrahi stood for the music of Jews who were expelled from Arab countries after 1948, for example from Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and even Georgia. However, Israel's cultural production at the time was already occupied by the majority society. And they mainly listened to European music. And so this music emerged in niches, in taverns and bars in Haifa and Jaffa, in combination with fresh influences from jazz and rock and traditional instruments from the Maghreb/Levante region, recorded and sold in the underground. And over the years, the term Mizrahi has become an umbrella for everything that could be described as "domestic world music". It also includes the wildly popular "Greek Craze", based around the Greek Laïko pop imported by musician Aris San, as well as the Anatolian sound, Ethiopian pop and the music of Iranian Jews. Some creative explosions even managed to mix all of this in just one song.

"Domestic world music" - in the helplessness of the description, this is analogous to the treatment of the local music production of so-called guest workers. Between global success and systematic marginalization, "Mizrahi" music has become the dominant force in the mainstream. On this evening, we can discuss what recognition in the so-called dominant culture looks like. Because together with Sapir von Abel, Yasmin Tal and Sebastian Reier, we will dive in: With incredible music, hair-raising anecdotes, original records and compilations, with MP3s and videos and a lot of living room atmosphere, a music kiosk is being created that will broaden many horizons.
