Marcos Morau and Goyo Montero: two artists with strong signatures meet in this premiere at the Staatsballett Hannover.
Whether with his own Barcelona-based ensemble La Veronal or with one of the numerous international companies that show his work, Marcos Morau stands for an unmistakable style between dance, theater and visual art. One of his key works is Tundra, created in 2017 for the National Dance Company of Wales. The title refers to the Arctic steppe regions, which are among the most fragile ecosystems in the world and at the same time extremely relevant for the climate. Morau subjects an amalgam of archaic materials - gestures, folklore, old music as well as pagan and sacred rituals - to a radically contemporary view and confronts us "with the open question of how life continues when a community no longer offers refuge but becomes a machinery of control". For the premiere at the Staatsballett Hannover, he is working with a newly assembled team of designers and choreographic assistants - in search of "a resonance" for the work he created ten years ago in the current European context "characterized by political tensions, identity debates and critical re-evaluations of history", says Morau.
Ballet director Goyo Montero also shows a new color in the spectrum of his works with his world premiere. With the dancers of the Staatsballett and the artists he added to his team for the premieres of Goldberg and Swan Lake. Rothbart's story, he embarks on a creative journey with a destination that is currently still open.
