The ESG Choir cordially invites you to a performance of the Requiem in D minor by Wolfgang A. Mozart and Rheinberger's Stabat Mater. The concerts will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 7 pm in the Protestant church in Schriesheim and on Sunday, February 1, 2026 at 7 pm in St. Peter's Church in Heidelberg. The ensemble will be conducted by Xaver Detzel and the choir will be accompanied by the orchestra of St. Peter's Church.
Mozart wrote his Requiem in the last days of his life and died before he could complete it. The famous Lacrimosa breaks off completely after the first eight bars. The back movements were only notated in the vocal parts and bass. After Mozart's death, the work was completed by his pupil Franz Xaver Süßmayr. The Requiem places a strong focus on the choral part compared to the soloist and instrumental parts. The existential character of this work is emphasized by the vocal power of the 150-strong choir and the orchestra of St. Peter's Church.
As a musical form, the Stabat Mater depicts the suffering of Jesus' mother after his death. As a composer at the end of the classical-romantic era, Josef Rheinberger mainly wrote organ music, but also some well-known choral works such as the Abendlied. His Stabat Mater is characterized by the harmonic twists and turns that lead the listener from suffering to hope and inner peace.
Xaver Detzel (conductor), Julika Birke (soprano), Cordula Stepp (alto), Ferdinand Dehner (tenor), Michael Roman (bass)
