The fountain courtyard of the Residenz becomes the stage for a musical thunderstorm: Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, performed by the renowned Venezia Festival Opera with a large choir, soloists and orchestra, unleashes a rush of sound that sets the heart and senses vibrating in equal measure.

The very first bars of the monumental opening "O Fortuna" leave no doubt - this is a musical event that goes far beyond a classical concert. It is a dramatic rite, a musical spectacle about the primal themes of human existence: love, lust for life, fate.

Medieval meets modern - sound meets body
Carl Orff's composition from 1937 is based on medieval texts that were discovered in Benediktbeuern - songs about living, loving, drinking and the play of fate. The language is coarse, true to life, passionate - and Orff's music turns it into a rhythmically explosive, emotionally charged world of sound that still shakes concert stages around the world today.

The Venezia Festival Opera, known for decades for its high-quality performances, which have even been filmed by Arte TV, combines musical excellence with pure expressiveness in this concert performance. Supported by a top-class ensemble of soloists, a powerful extra choir and an orchestra precisely conducted by Nayden Todorov (director of the Sofia National Philharmonic Orchestra), the result is a work full of energy and archaic power.
