A haunting solo tells a story of origin: between an Indian mother and a father from Guadeloupe, the daughter recounts the colonial past.
In Mutikkappatâta, actress Nathalie Vairac deals with history, the legacy of which seems to have endless repercussions. Her solo work is based on her own biography: Born in Bordeaux to an Indian mother and a father from Guadeloupe, her attempt at storytelling quickly comes up against a colonial past that continues to shape bodies, languages and movements to this day. Colonial history does not appear here as a historical chapter, but as a quiet, persistent, permanent presence.
The piece asks in a haunting tone, with video and images, how violence is passed on, even where it is not obvious. It shows how colonial experiences continue in families, even if colonialism no longer officially exists today. As silence, as a rupture, as something constantly present. Remembrance is not narrated, but made tangible in breath, voice, rhythm and stillness. The resulting, overlapping images of video and movement are fragile. They refer to territories, crossings and losses. Nathalie Vairac's body itself becomes a visible archive, interwoven with stories from India, Vietnam, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Mutikkappatâta asks what it means to live with a history that was never entirely one's own, but must be accepted as one's own, and how identity is made up of many layers, some of which are contradictory.
The performance refuses to provide clear answers. Instead, it opens up a space in which personal memory and political history become inseparable.
After many years of studying psychoanalysis and training in therapeutic healing, Nathalie Vairac conveys her art with the intention of leaving a mark on the audience. She founded the Compagnie La Lune Nouvelle in Dakar. She has participated in major exhibitions. Vairac lives and works in Dakar, Senegal.
