The 24-year-old sings exceptionally catchy pop songs that capture complex and deep emotions. Over the years, the Oakland-born, now Nashville-based artist has gained a loyal global fan base with her undisguised self-expression and collaborated with musicians such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Noah Kahan. Her third album "liminal space" tells of a time of great upheaval and uncertainty that she herself is experiencing in her family life. Combined with a new, bolder sound infused with elements of folk and indie rock, the result is an up-close exploration of what she sums up as "the dark, complicated and also very beautiful chaos inherent in a mother-daughter relationship". "From the beginning, I wanted this album to be about familial bonds," says the singer-songwriter, who is also known as Maia. "Last year, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, which solidified this idea and made me dive deeper into our relationship. I had to watch her go through something so unexpected and so I built the album around questions like 'How do we as humans deal with enormous change?"
