Glamours, the debut album by the four-piece Brooklyn trio My Son The Doctor, walks a fine line between ’90s slacker rock and the rousing pop-punk of the 2000s, embodying the often exuberant, sometimes irreverent, and consistently catchy sound of a band at the forefront of the Five Boroughs’ indie rock scene.
As the result of nearly a decade of musical collaboration, the songs on “Glamours” reflect the brisk—and at times feverish—approach of Brian Hemmert (vocals), Joel Kalow (guitar), Matt Nitzberg (bass), and John Mason (drums) to songwriting and live performance. Forged in the crucible of New York’s DIY scene (where they frequently shared the stage with other New York bands such as Bodega, Gustaf, and Teenage Halloween), the album’s ten tracks crystallize the band’s breathtaking energy as well as their nimble, responsive approach to songwriting, drawing equally on anthemic and raw qualities—dissonant, occasionally jagged riffs intertwine with memorably offbeat, free-associative wordplay and taut percussion, creating a space that remains transgressive, spirited, and delightfully offbeat throughout the album’s 30 minutes.
Born in an improvised environment and written on a knife’s edge, “Glamours” embodies the project’s laid-back philosophy, which rests on a foundation of tension and determination; tender self-reflection gives way in “Drunk Kids” to memorable, sentimental hooks, meandering subway impressions give way to exuberant call-and-response in “Laurence Bigando,” and breakneck restlessness transforms into out-of-tune relief in “Pink Banana.” While the album is heavily influenced by alternative greats like Sonic Youth, Hop Along, Jeff Rosenstock, and Weezer, it embodies the raw energy that makes My Son The Doctor so unique—an echo of sweaty, sold-out concerts and that atmosphere you can only experience live.
Recorded at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium in North Carolina, mixed by Jeremy Snyder (IDLES, Pure Adult, Gilla Band) and featuring a cover by Lydia Gammill of Gustaf, “Glamours” offers an authentic take on 2020s New York indie rock—one that’s never contrived, not algorithmic, and constantly evolving.
