"A studio of one's own is usually more than just a functional workspace for musicians*. It is an intimate, self-created space. A place of retreat and the center of the creative process, of "going outside." Filled with one's own instruments and recording devices, which are important tools and symbolically represent one's creative journey. So it is like a catastrophe when this place is destroyed or looted by burglars.

This is exactly what happened to Nabihah Iqbal. The British-Pakistani musician, radio host, curator, lecturer and human rights lawyer was working on the follow-up to her acclaimed solo debut, Weighing Of The Heart. And then suddenly everything was gone. All the instruments, all the equipment and all the new music recorded so far. In the midst of this helplessness, she got a call. On the line was her grandmother, her grandfather had suffered a brain hemorrhage. While the police were still searching for fingerprints in her empty studio, Iqbal flew to Pakistan to visit her relatives. It all happened in the early 2020s - just as the world was being crippled by a pandemic.

"Dreamer," Iqbal's now finally completed second album, is of course scarred by these grave events. "You left your soul on the earth / You left without knowing its worth," she sings in "Sunflower," making the gravity of that loss palpable. It's a - and here, for once, the phrase applies - very personal LP, on which she develops the avant-treampop of "Weighing Of The Heart."" - ByteFM
