Nach dem Rosa Winkel – Intensiv-Theaterworkshop

In the organizer's words:

"Remembering means fighting!" - an oft-quoted cry when it comes to our responsibility to society as a whole. And yet there are still gaps in our engagement with the past. The commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz and the end of the Second World War 80 years ago leaves a bitter aftertaste: 1945 did not mean an end to persecution and discrimination for all victim groups equally. Homosexual men remained in the crosshairs. Section 175, which criminalized their sexuality, remained in place - the social stigmatization continued seamlessly. A painful continuity that still has an impact today.

Little is known about the lives of those who survived persecution - and yet were disenfranchised and made invisible even after 1945. Many were imprisoned again. They were denied compensation and their stories found no place in the collective memory. Like those of other queer people who also suffered from the continuation of repressive laws and social ostracism.

In autumn 2024, young people led by director Marvin Wittiber explored the persecution of the queer scene in National Socialist Düsseldorf in the theater project "Allein im Rosa Winkel". The theater collective is now continuing this work and focusing on the continuities of discrimination after 1945, because Düsseldorf, once a center of homosexual persecution in the Third Reich, was also a place where the exclusion and invisibilization of queer people continued unabated in the post-war period.

In this workshop, you will follow the biographies of those who survived the persecution and the shattered, once flourishing queer subculture. Using theater, her own texts and the unifying power of music, we will explore how we can tell these stories today - how we can break through the droning silence, raise a powerful voice and finally give these people the justice they deserve. Because who, if not us?
