With the exhibition "Nagaland. Voices from Northeast India", the Humboldt Forum is drawing attention to the Indian state of Nagaland. The Naga people live here and in neighboring areas - an umbrella term for more than 30 different social groups who, despite many similarities, differ culturally and linguistically, as well as in their self-image. The desire to express a common identity only gained central importance for the Naga in the post-colonial period, in the course of their struggle for political autonomy. Since the end of the 19th century, the Naga have been the focus of European research interest. But why does the fascination with the culture of "the Naga" possibly tell us more about Western interests and ideas than about the plural identities of the Naga themselves? What consequences do colonialism, missionary work, the quest for autonomy and globalization processes have for the Naga's self-image today? And what does Naganess mean? The guided tour invites you to explore the construction of images of self and others.
